Lithium ion battery waste is becoming a growing operational challenge for the waste industry as rechargeable batteries spread across consumer electronics, power tools, e bikes and household equipment.

In northwest Iowa, the Northwest Iowa Landfill is responding with a dedicated collection program designed to keep damaged or discarded batteries out of conventional waste and recycling streams.

The landfill, located southwest of Sheldon, has installed specialized collection bins for residents across its service area. The program is intended to reduce the risk of battery related fires, which can occur when lithium ion cells are crushed, damaged or exposed to conditions that cause thermal runaway during waste processing.

The expansion of battery powered products has increased the volume of lithium ion batteries entering municipal waste systems. However, the figures cited by the landfill regarding a 900% increase in battery use and a 41% rise in catastrophic fires should be treated cautiously because the underlying methodology and industry dataset are not identified in the announcement.

The broader fire risk is well established. Lithium ion batteries can retain significant energy after being discarded, and mechanical processing at material recovery facilities, transfer stations and landfills can damage cells. Short circuits or physical damage can then trigger fires that are difficult to extinguish and can reignite after appearing to be contained.

The problem extends beyond consumer electronics. Batteries from e bikes, cordless power tools, rechargeable toys and other larger devices can contain substantially more stored energy than conventional household batteries, increasing the consequences of improper disposal.

Dedicated collection provides one relatively simple intervention. Instead of entering garbage or curbside recycling, rechargeable lithium ion batteries can be separated before reaching equipment that could damage them.

Northwest Iowa Landfill purchased its collection bins from CleanRiver Recycling Solutions, which supplies waste collection systems to municipalities and other organizations across North America.

The initiative follows similar programs in Iowa communities including Sioux City and Dubuque. Regional collection centers across the state also accept lithium ion batteries for recycling, creating a network of alternatives to household disposal.

The challenge is increasingly relevant as electrification expands beyond passenger electronics. Battery powered transportation, tools and equipment are increasing the number and size of lithium ion batteries eventually requiring collection, reuse, recycling or disposal.

For waste operators, this creates a logistical problem as much as an environmental one. Collection systems must identify batteries before they reach compactors, shredders and other equipment capable of damaging them. Public participation is therefore a critical part of the safety strategy.
