Italgas Invests €35M to Create Innovation Hub in Turin

Italgas, a leading gas distribution company, has announced a 35 million euro investment to transform its historic headquarters in Corso Regina Margherita into an innovation hub.

The redevelopment project will encompass over 44,000 square meters and serve as a research campus for studies on methane, biomethane, and green hydrogen. The goal is to contribute actively to the decarbonization and ecological transition process.

Designed by Giugiaro Architettura, the new Vanchiglia research campus will accommodate 250 employees and feature state-of-the-art laboratories for material testing, instrument calibration, and the development of new digital skills. The renovation includes the enhancement of two gasometers, industrial archeology structures, preserving their historical significance.

Italgas CEO Paolo Gallo expects construction to begin once all necessary authorizations are granted by the municipality. The project will be executed in two phases, with the existing buildings and external areas slated for redevelopment by 2025. The completion of the new innovation hub is targeted for 2026. Additionally, Italgas is working on patenting a new meter compatible with all types of gas, which is expected to be introduced later this year. The campus will also prioritize cybersecurity to safeguard the company’s infrastructures from external attacks.

The redevelopment plan prioritizes sustainability and the creation of green spaces. Over 9,000 square meters of new greenery will be established, representing a 90% increase. Pedestrian and cycle paths will be developed to promote eco-friendly mobility. Furthermore, the project includes the construction of 250 new car parks equipped with 30 charging points, supporting the growing demand for electric vehicles.

The intervention will also involve replacing 250 meters of the perimeter wall on Corso Farini with a fence, visually connecting the area with the surrounding neighborhood. Turin Mayor Stefano Lo Russo sees the Italgas innovation hub as a source of pride for the city and an opportunity for urban redevelopment, further solidifying Turin’s position as a hub for innovation and research.

Italgas’ investment in the transformation of its headquarters into a cutting-edge research campus underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and technological advancement. The studies conducted at the hub will contribute to the ongoing efforts in achieving decarbonization and promoting a greener future.
