J.B. Hunt to Buy Nikola’s Zero-Emission Trucks

J.B. Hunt Transport Services, a prominent supply chain solutions provider, has joined forces with Nikola Corporation, a global leader in zero-emissions transportation, to purchase 13 zero-emission Class 8 trucks.

This strategic collaboration marks a crucial milestone in J.B. Hunt’s quest to reduce its carbon footprint and embrace greener transportation practices.

J.B. Hunt’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility is evident in its ambitious goal to reduce carbon emission intensity by 32% by 2034, with a 2019 baseline. Emphasizing alternative-powered equipment as a key focus area, the company seeks to lead the industry towards a low-carbon future and align its operations with global efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

The collaboration between J.B. Hunt and Nikola brings forth an array of cutting-edge technologies, including battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. By integrating zero-emission Class 8 trucks into its fleet, J.B. Hunt is poised to revolutionize freight transport with innovative, exhaust-free solutions.

The adoption of zero-emission trucks has the potential to drive a significant reduction in carbon emissions and air pollution associated with traditional freight transportation. By embracing eco-friendly technologies, J.B. Hunt aims to set a precedent for sustainable practices in the logistics industry, making a positive impact on the environment and society.

J.B. Hunt has been proactive in exploring emerging technologies for exhaust-free vehicles, progressively incorporating electric vehicles into its operations. In 2022, the company acquired its first company-owned Class 8 electric vehicle, demonstrating its commitment to embracing cleaner transportation options.

In addition to electric vehicles, J.B. Hunt’s intermodal conversion initiatives have played a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions. Over the past decade, the company’s intermodal service has successfully avoided an estimated 30 million metric tons of CO2e emissions that would have otherwise resulted from over-the-road truck transportation.

The 13 zero-emission trucks will be strategically located at facilities servicing J.B. Hunt’s key routes, including in the greater Los Angeles and Phoenix areas. The selection of battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles provides the company with a diverse range of clean transportation options to cater to specific operational needs.

The hydrogen fuel cell trucks’ deployment will be supported by Nikola’s hydrogen arm, HYLA, which will supply the required hydrogen and fueling infrastructure. This collaboration showcases the importance of building robust hydrogen infrastructure to support the wider adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

The partnership between J.B. Hunt and Nikola exemplifies the power of collaboration between industry leaders to drive sustainable transportation forward. It is a testament to the engineering and manufacturing excellence of Nikola’s Class 8 trucks and the innovative hydrogen infrastructure solutions provided by HYLA.

As J.B. Hunt and Nikola pave the way for zero-emission Class 8 trucks, the transportation industry is witnessing a transformative shift towards a greener future.
