In a groundbreaking collaboration, Japan’s energy major JERA and Yamanashi Prefecture have joined forces to spearhead the development of a regional hydrogen value chain. This strategic alliance aims to establish a robust, cost-effective system for the production and supply of carbon-free power and hydrogen-based fuel.

Yamanashi Prefecture brings to the table its cutting-edge power-to-gas (P2G) system-based regional energy model, with a specific focus on the Yamanashi model P2G system. This system employs polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysis equipment to produce green hydrogen. On the other hand, JERA, a global energy player, contributes its expertise in crafting a comprehensive green hydrogen value chain.

The initial phase of this collaborative venture involves the installation of hydrogen power-generating equipment in Komekurayama, Yamanashi. The partners plan to conduct demonstration testing, showcasing local power-generating technology that ensures the supply of 24/7 carbon-free electricity. This groundbreaking approach integrates various energy sources, including solar power, catering to companies in Yamanashi Prefecture.

Beyond immediate goals, Yamanashi Prefecture and JERA share a broader vision of contributing to carbon neutrality. Their concerted efforts aim to actively participate in decarbonization initiatives across diverse sectors, paving the way for a hydrogen energy society that harnesses local resources.

This collaboration follows JERA’s multifaceted endeavors in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. In October 2023, the company inked a memorandum of understanding with Kyushu Electric Power, signaling a commitment to comprehensive discussions on collaborative efforts for decarbonization and ensuring a stable energy supply.
