KBR has secured a pivotal license and engineering design contract from Hanwha Impact Corporation for a monumental project in the Republic of Korea.
This project involves the construction of the world’s first commercial ammonia cracking unit, leveraging KBR’s cutting-edge H2ACTSM technology.
This remarkable endeavor is set to become the largest capacity ammonia cracking plant ever announced, with a clear mission to produce clean hydrogen to power a planned facility in Daesan, Korea. It’s a strategic step forward in the journey toward large-scale and sustainable hydrogen utilization. Notably, ammonia cracking, which involves converting transported ammonia back into hydrogen, is considered a key enabler in achieving global decarbonization targets.
Under the terms of this contract, KBR will play a pivotal role by providing technology licensing and proprietary engineering design for the unit. The ultimate aim is to establish a facility capable of delivering an impressive daily output of over 200 metric tons of clean hydrogen as a fuel source.
Doug Kelly, President of Technology at KBR, expressed the company’s enthusiasm and commitment to this groundbreaking project, stating, “We are honored to be selected by Hanwha for this flagship project, which will accelerate the realization of their decarbonization targets and play a vital role in Korea’s national sustainability objectives. KBR’s breakthrough ammonia cracking technology, H2ACT, delivers a reliable and holistic solution for large-scale, efficient, and sustainable hydrogen production.”
KBR’s position as a global leader in ammonia technology is underpinned by a rich history that dates back to 1943. Over the years, the company has successfully licensed and designed more than 250 ammonia plants across the globe. This wealth of experience and expertise places KBR in a unique position to drive innovation in the realm of clean hydrogen production.
The significance of this project cannot be overstated. It represents a substantial leap forward in the global pursuit of sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions. By harnessing KBR’s pioneering H2ACT technology, Korea is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of clean hydrogen production and decarbonization efforts on a global scale. This initiative aligns closely with the broader goals of addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, making it a milestone in the transition to a more sustainable energy landscape.
