Levidian and United Utilities are teaming up to transform sewage biogas produced in Manchester into a sustainable feed source for both graphene and hydrogen production.

This Government-funded project marks a significant milestone for the UK water industry, showcasing the innovative use of Levidian’s LOOP technology to decarbonize biogas generated within the wastewater treatment process. The outcome of this collaboration has the potential to revolutionize the energy landscape and pave the way for a more sustainable and greener future.

The primary goal of the collaboration is to harness the potential of sewage biogas and leverage Levidian’s LOOP technology to produce high-value products like hydrogen and graphene. The LOOP100 system, developed by Cambridge-based Levidian, will be deployed at United Utilities’ Manchester Bioresources Centre in Davyhulme. Through the LOOP100 system, the partners aim to decarbonize the biogas and demonstrate the simultaneous production of hydrogen and graphene. This project will serve as the first demonstration of a LOOP100 system, and the successful implementation will open up new opportunities for larger installations to sustainably produce hydrogen from biogas in the future.

The LOOP100 system, an innovative climate technology, will play a crucial role in converting sewage biogas into valuable green products. This cutting-edge technology holds the potential to decarbonize the biogas generated during wastewater treatment, effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to climate change mitigation. By utilizing the LOOP100 system, Levidian and United Utilities will generate both hydrogen and graphene, two essential components in the pursuit of cleaner energy sources and advanced materials.

The production of hydrogen from sewage biogas presents an opportunity to harness renewable energy and contribute to the development of a hydrogen-based economy. Hydrogen, a clean and versatile fuel, can be utilized across various sectors, including transportation, industry, and power generation, to significantly reduce carbon emissions and foster sustainable development.

The production of graphene, a remarkable nanomaterial known for its exceptional strength and conductivity, holds vast potential for various applications. From enhancing the efficiency of energy storage devices to revolutionizing electronics and materials science, graphene’s utilization in cutting-edge technologies can lead to significant advancements in multiple industries.

The partnership between Levidian and United Utilities represents a remarkable step forward in turning sewage biogas into green fuel sources. With the LOOP100 system at the forefront, the project demonstrates how innovative technologies can play a vital role in achieving a sustainable, low-carbon future. By producing hydrogen and graphene from biogas, this collaborative effort paves the way for a cleaner, greener energy landscape, contributing to the UK’s commitment to net-zero emissions and fostering a more sustainable water industry. The successful implementation of the project will not only bolster the UK’s position in the green energy transition but also inspire similar initiatives worldwide to harness the potential of waste for a cleaner and more prosperous future.
