Liquid organic hydrogen carrier solution now available from Honeywell

The Honeywell Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC), a product that enables the long-distance transportation of clean hydrogen, was unveiled by Honeywell.

By utilising existing refinery and transportation infrastructure, this low-cost approach can assist in meeting the expanding needs for hydrogen consumption across numerous industries.

Although it is anticipated that hydrogen will be crucial in lowering greenhouse gas emissions, under normal circumstances it is a flammable gas with a low density and cannot be transported effectively in a gaseous form. Liquid hydrogen and chemical carriers like ammonia are two current transport options, but they would both need new infrastructure to handle the increased volume. The LOHC system from Honeywell UOP uses already-existing infrastructure and refining assets to produce and transport the carrier.

In the Honeywell LOHC solution, hydrogen gas is chemically mixed into a practical liquid carrier that is compatible with current infrastructure using the Honeywell UOP Toluene Saturation Process. The carrier can then be conveyed similarly to how petrol or other hydrocarbons are delivered. The Honeywell UOP Methylcyclohexane Dehydrogenation Process is used to recover the hydrogen from the carrier once it has reached its target. To liberate the hydrogen from the liquid carrier for usage in a variety of commercial and industrial applications, existing idle oil refining assets can be updated. The Honeywell LOHC solution’s carrier is easily accessible and requires little preparation.

The Honeywell Green Hydrogen programme includes LOHC. The programme makes use of years of market-leading membrane and catalyst development and manufacturing experience for the gas processing, refining, steel, and petrochemical industries, as well as knowledge gained from the most recent work on developing novel membranes for battery and power applications.
