Poland-based Hynfra and the Government of Mauritania signed a Framework Agreement for the development of a $1.5 billion integrated green ammonia facility.

The project, to be built adjacent to the Somelec wind farm, is designed to produce 100,000 tons of green ammonia annually beginning in 2030. It will integrate solar PV and wind capacity, electrolyzers, a synthesis plant, desalination units, and dedicated export infrastructure via Port de l’Amitié, Mauritania’s largest harbor. Beyond ammonia production, the facility includes energy storage systems and logistics infrastructure intended to stabilize operations and streamline exports.

Mauritania’s natural resource base underpins the project’s economic logic. The country has some of the highest solar irradiation levels in the world, coupled with consistent coastal winds, creating a renewable generation profile favorable for hydrogen production. Hynfra President Tomoho Umeda underscored this combination as a critical factor, citing both natural advantages and the transfer of Polish industrial expertise in ammonia synthesis.

From a policy perspective, the agreement represents a step forward from a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2024, signaling stronger government backing for the venture. For Mauritania, the deal builds on its broader ambition to attract investment into renewable energy projects that can diversify the national economy, which remains heavily reliant on mining.
