Plug Power’s new green hydrogen production facility in Genesee County, New York, will use two 500,000-gallon double-wall liquid hydrogen spheres designed and built by McDermott’s storage company, CB&I.
Proton exchange membrane electrolyzer technology from Plug Power is expected to produce 45 metric tons of green liquid hydrogen per day, making it North America’s largest green hydrogen plant.
Construction of the two spheres, which includes engineering, procurement, and construction, will take place on Plug Power’s 30-acre site in WNY STAMP, the Western New York Science, Technology, and Advanced Manufacturing Park.
With an internal design pressure of 30 pounds per square inch and a design temperature of minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit, the stainless-steel inner sphere will hold the liquid hydrogen and measure nearly 52 feet in diameter. A nearly 60-foot-diameter carbon steel sphere will serve as the outer shell’s insulation container.
The final investment decision has been made, and the project is currently under construction.
