Mitsubishi Corporation is set to invest a staggering $690 million in developing the world’s largest green hydrogen plant, marking a significant stride in the global shift towards cleaner and renewable fuel sources.

The Japanese industrial conglomerate has forged a partnership with Dutch renewable energy company Eneco to establish Eneco Diamond Hydrogen, the entity tasked with overseeing the construction and operation of this ambitious project.

The venture is slated to commence construction in 2026, with hydrogen production expected to kick off in 2029. The innovative aspect of this endeavor lies in utilizing Eneco’s wind farms, boasting an installed capacity of just under 7.4GW, to generate green hydrogen on an unprecedented scale. The projected annual production of 80,000 tonnes of hydrogen sets a new benchmark, nearly 30 times larger than any existing facility.

One of the primary objectives of this mega green hydrogen project is to leverage economies of scale to drive down the cost of green hydrogen production. Currently, producing hydrogen through water electrolysis using renewable energy is approximately three times more expensive than traditional methods reliant on fossil fuels. Mitsubishi’s strategic approach is not only to pioneer in large-scale green hydrogen production but also to make substantial advancements in cost-efficiency, potentially reshaping the economics of renewable hydrogen.

Beyond the immediate goals of the project, Mitsubishi envisions the venture as a learning ground, intending to gather invaluable insights into the intricacies of developing and operating large-scale green hydrogen facilities. The knowledge gained from this endeavor positions Mitsubishi favorably for future expansions globally. As nations intensify their focus on decarbonization and sustainable energy solutions, the experience gleaned from this initiative could catalyze the establishment of similar ventures worldwide.

The green hydrogen produced by the Eneco Diamond Hydrogen project will find its way to consumers through Eneco’s established retail electricity sales network. Additionally, a dedicated pipeline infrastructure will be employed for efficient and widespread distribution. This comprehensive approach ensures that the green hydrogen, once produced, seamlessly integrates into existing energy ecosystems, fostering accessibility and usability.

The significance of Mitsubishi’s investment extends beyond the immediate project, influencing the global hydrogen landscape. Large-scale green hydrogen production has the potential to be a game-changer, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional hydrogen sources. If successful, this initiative could accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen, addressing environmental concerns and contributing to the broader goals of a sustainable energy future.
