Mitsui E&S, a Japanese multidiscipline engineering company, has completed the construction of a cutting-edge hydrogen gas supply facility at its Tamano factory.

This remarkable development marks a crucial step in Mitsui E&S’s ambition to play a pivotal role in the burgeoning hydrogen-related business, driving clean energy initiatives in Japan.

The recently constructed facility at the Tamano factory boasts the capacity to supply a substantial volume of hydrogen gas at a rate of 1,000 normal cubic meters per hour (Nm³/h). The Tamano factory serves as the primary production base for Mitsui E&S’s core products, which include large marine diesel engines and industrial machinery/reciprocating compressors.

Mitsui E&S has formulated a strategic plan to utilize the hydrogen from this facility to power its robust 7-megawatt (MW) marine engine. This endeavor falls under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism subsidy project, in collaboration with Daihatsu Diesel Co., Ltd., which was selected in the fiscal year 2021.

As part of the subsidy project, Mitsui E&S is committed to advancing hydrogen combustion technology. They aim to develop a specialized compressor capable of elevating hydrogen pressure to 35 megapascals (MPa) and a gas valve train (GVT) designed to regulate hydrogen supply.

Moreover, Mitsui E&S will pioneer the coupling operation technology, facilitating seamless fuel supply to large marine engines. This concerted effort will accelerate the development of hydrogen combustion propulsion plants, bringing clean energy solutions to the forefront.

The pivotal equipment at the heart of this facility is the reciprocating compressor, which plays a central role in the hydrogen supply chain. Mitsui E&S has partnered with Kaji Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the company, to adopt this compressor alongside a booster compressor.

A noteworthy milestone in this venture is the demonstration of high-pressure seal technology under non-lubricated conditions, showcasing Mitsui E&S’s commitment to achieving the stringent high-pressure specifications required for compressors in the hydrogen supply chain.

Mitsui E&S’s dedication to building a state-of-the-art hydrogen gas supply facility is a testament to the company’s vision for a sustainable, clean energy future. Hydrogen, often touted as the fuel of tomorrow, is gradually taking center stage in Japan’s energy landscape. Mitsui E&S’s pioneering efforts in advancing hydrogen technology and infrastructure are instrumental in propelling Japan into the realm of hydrogen power.

As the world strives for cleaner energy solutions to combat climate change, investments in hydrogen infrastructure and technology are key drivers in this quest. Mitsui E&S’s hydrogen gas supply facility is poised to make a significant impact on Japan’s journey toward a greener and more sustainable future.
