MT Aerospace Selects Hyliko to Supply Hydrogen Trucks for French Guiana’s Space Center

The recent selection of Hyliko by MT Aerospace to supply hydrogen trucks for operations at French Guiana’s Space Center marks a critical shift towards sustainable logistics in space exploration.

As industries globally pivot toward green energy, this initiative reflects a broader trend within aerospace to address carbon footprints, a necessity underscored by the International Energy Agency’s findings that transport accounts for nearly a quarter of global CO2 emissions.

This development in French Guiana presents a tangible application of green energy in aerospace logistics, yet it also poses certain infrastructural challenges. Notably, the infrastructure required to support hydrogen vehicles remains limited compared to traditional fuel sources.

A significant advantage outlined in this collaboration is the heightened energy efficiency hydrogen trucks offer, as evidenced by studies citing up to 80% efficiency levels in fuel cell vehicles compared to 25% in internal combustion engines (ICE).

Stations designed for hydrogen refueling also come with high costs compared to their electric charge counterparts, a situation compounded by French Guiana’s remote location and logistical complexities. Yet, the shift to hydrogen is supported by a burgeoning market for fuel cell systems, predicted to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 14% through 2030 as per a recent Hydrogen Council study. This anticipated growth could drive down costs and foster broader acceptance of hydrogen solutions, a hopeful prospect given their inclusion in MT Aerospace’s future-oriented strategic plans.

Moreover, this move stands reflective of the broader, governmental push towards decarbonization policies globally, a trend evidenced by commitments like France’s 2020 National Low-Carbon Strategy aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050. French Guiana, with its pivotal role in space launches for the European Space Agency, is poised to serve as a template for similar applications at other launch sites.
