Hydrogen networks are becoming more popular in Germany. This is supported by recent industry studies. In the latest market survey “Hydrogen Demand and Generation,” for example, transmission system operators (FNB) report on this.

The results are already available in the scenario framework 2022-2032 draft document. FNB Gas has begun to display graphical depictions of reported hydrogen injections and withdrawals.

“The FNB’s market survey for hydrogen projects found a large increase in hydrogen generation and demand in Germany up to 2032 and beyond,” says Inga Posch, Managing Director of FNB Gas.

The high demand reports also revealed that market participants perceive hydrogen as the future of energy supply and have begun to plan for it. “Hydrogen has enormous potential for rapidly decreasing CO2 emissions and altering the energy system in a cost-effective manner. ”Our network lays the groundwork and framework for this,” explains Posch.

Hydrogen projects connected to the pipeline network can be found throughout Germany. “This indicates that, in the near future, we’ll require a supra-regional, pipeline-based hydrogen transport system to connect hydrogen sources with hydrogen sinks. “From an economic standpoint, the ideal way to develop this is to convert existing lines to hydrogen from the natural gas network,” the official stated.

Furthermore, many distribution network operators have expressed an interest. This emphasizes the importance of developing entire areas with high-performance hydrogen infrastructure at an early stage and over a vast area. This is a requirement for guaranteeing that the distribution networks can provide a high number of clients.

Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW), for example, is a supplier. Through its subsidiary VNG, the business indicated that it would gradually tailor its gas network toward the usage of hydrogen. This is consistent with the recent agreement between the energy business Uniper and the Danish company Orsted on a strategic partnership. It calls for the co-generation of offshore wind power for industrial-scale hydrogen production. This is set to take place in Wilhelmshaven.
