Nel Hydrogen, a subsidiary of Norway’s Nel ASA, has signed a contract with Samsung C&T Corporation for 10 megawatts of alkaline electrolyzer equipment, valued at approximately EUR 5 million.
This equipment will be used in Korea’s first pilot plant producing ‘pink’ hydrogen, which harnesses surplus nuclear energy to generate hydrogen.
This project marks a significant shift in how surplus energy from nuclear power can be utilized. Instead of letting excess power go to waste, it can now be converted into hydrogen through electrolysis, thus enhancing energy efficiency.
Samsung C&T, known for its global engineering and construction projects, is actively expanding its portfolio in the hydrogen sector. This contract with Nel follows a previous agreement centered on a solar-powered off-grid project. Samsung C&T is confident in Nel’s reliable technology for executing Korea’s first nuclear-powered hydrogen project.
The equipment ordered by Samsung, including alkaline stacks and balance-of-stacks, will be produced at Nel’s Herøya facility in Norway, which boasts the world’s first fully automated electrolyzer production line.
