Gascade Gastransport GmbH (GASCADE) and Gassco AS (Gassco) have entered a memorandum of understanding to set up hydrogen transport via a pipeline in the North Sea.
This cooperation aligns with the strategic partnership of the Norwegian and German Governments in climate, renewable energy, and green industry.
Gassco’s focus is on ensuring Norway’s hydrogen production reaches Germany through transportation infrastructure. Simultaneously, GASCADE is concerned with the development of AquaDuctus, an offshore hydrogen pipeline in the North Sea interconnecting nearby offshore pipelines and connecting downstream to Germany. The shared goal of the planned cooperation is to ensure efficient and unified project planning. This effort is expected to allow hydrogen transport between the two countries from 2030 onwards.
AquaDuctus is designed as an offshore pipeline throughout the German North Sea, ending in the Wilhelmshaven area and continuing onshore to Bunde at the German-Dutch border to provide a hydrogen network connection.
AquaDuctus has attained both IPCEI and PCI status from the European Commission, highlighting the project’s European significance and allowing for state funding. At present, GASCADE awaits formal confirmation from national authorities to initiate early works-start. AquaDuctus also forms part of the draft of the German hydrogen core network.
