Already in 2016, Proton Motor offered an individually developed HyRange® hydrogen fuel cell system to Austrian automotive contract maker Magna Steyr for a new hybrid car.
This is referred to as the Fuel Cell Range Extended Electric Vehicle, or FC REEV (pictured). Unlike a normal hybrid engine, which is powered by a combination of gasoline or diesel and electricity, the FC REEV type is powered by both electricity and hydrogen, resulting in a ZERO-EMISSION hybrid drive.
Since 2019, the HyRange® drive solution for E-Trucks Europe has been developed for integration into garbage collecting vehicles, including as part of the EU-funded project REVIVE (Refuse Vehicle Innovation and Validation in Europe). Two recent international studies highlighting the expansion of the automotive hydrogen fuel cell sector include a comparison of Proton Motor’s fuel cell technology to that of other major manufacturers.
