Nike, the renowned sportswear giant, is making significant strides towards its zero-carbon, zero-waste future with the launch of the world’s first hydrogen-powered inland container ship.

As part of its ambitious Move To Zero journey, Nike aims to create a better world for all athletes by implementing innovative and sustainable solutions. The newly retrofitted vessel, named ‘H₂ Barge 1,’ utilizes hydrogen technology, resulting in zero carbon dioxide emissions. This groundbreaking initiative contributes to Nike’s goal of reducing 2,000 tons of CO2 annually, as the barge transports products between Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Nike’s European Logistics Campus in Belgium.

The introduction of the hydrogen-powered barge aligns with Nike’s comprehensive approach to sustainable logistics, enabling the company to achieve its 2025 target of reducing carbon emissions and minimizing its ecological footprint. Alongside hydrogen-powered shipping, Nike is also conducting final testing of a hydrogen truck for customer deliveries in Europe. Furthermore, the company is expanding its electric van delivery fleet in key European cities, such as Paris and London. These measures aim to enhance delivery efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.

Nike recognizes the environmental impact of air freight and is actively working to reduce its usage. By aligning production schedules with ocean freight departures and optimizing its distribution network, the company aims to decrease reliance on air freight, which generates 42 times more carbon emissions than ocean freight. Additionally, Nike is implementing measures to reduce the weight of shipping cartons, further reducing emissions associated with product transportation.

Noel Kinder, Nike’s Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasizes the company’s unwavering commitment to progress and sustainability. With a steadfast resolve, Nike seeks to tackle environmental challenges through collaborative efforts, ingenuity, and perseverance. By leveraging its influence and continuously developing innovative solutions, Nike aims to create positive momentum and move the world forward through the power of sports.
