NTPC to combine hydrogen with natural gas for household consumption

The Kawas Gas blending project of the state-owned NTPC will combine hydrogen with piped natural gas (PNG) for home use.

This is the first project of its sort in the country to combine hydrogen and PNG. Initially, 5 percent of the overall gas supply will be blended with hydrogen, and this percentage will progressively climb to 20 percent.

The gas would be delivered to 200 homes in the Aditya Nagar residential colony of NTPC Kawas in Hazira, the public sector power giant said in a statement, adding that this will reduce NTPC’s annual carbon emissions by 200 kg.

Moreover, the project aims to provide 200 households with 100 standard cubic metres of gas every day. The facility will have a 6.5-kilowatt polymer electrolyte membrane with a one-cubic-meter-per-hour capacity (scmh). The hydrogen generation facility will be powered by a 1 MW capacity floating solar power plant located at NTPC Kawas.

In an effort to boost the country’s green footprint, NTPC has adopted a number of measures to expand its green portfolio through the development of renewable projects.

Among the forthcoming green projects of NTPC was the green hydrogen natural gas blending project at the Kawas facility in Gujarat. Premier Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project along with the NTPC Nokh Solar Project in Jaisalmer and the Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, Ladakh, on Saturday.

As a move toward the nation’s decarbonization ambitions and Carbon Neutral Ladakh (CNL), NTPC has initiated India’s first green hydrogen mobility project with a fuel cell electric vehicle in Leh. The green hydrogen transportation project in Leh, Ladakh, is the first pilot project in India to deploy FCEVs for public usage.

In addition, NTPC is constructing a 735 MW Solar PV Project in Nokh, Rajasthan. This is India’s largest Domestic Content Requirement (DCR)-based Solar project, installing high-wattage bifacial PV Modules with a tracker system at a single location.
