NTT Data, a Japanese information technology service provider, is embarking on a new project to investigate the feasibility of running hydrogen pipelines beneath Tokyo. This initiative marks a significant step in efforts to diversify and clean up Japan’s energy resources.
Hydrogen is increasingly being viewed as a clean and efficient alternative to fossil fuels. It produces only water when burned, making it an attractive option for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Japan has been a frontrunner in exploring hydrogen energy, with plans to become a hydrogen-based society by 2050.
NTT Data’s study will assess the technical and economic viability of installing hydrogen pipelines under urban areas like Tokyo. The goal is to identify potential challenges and solutions, ultimately aiming to integrate hydrogen into the city’s energy infrastructure. This project is aligned with Japan’s broader energy diversification strategy, which includes significant investments in renewable energy sources.
Hydrogen pipelines could offer a more reliable and cleaner alternative to electric grids, especially in urban areas.
