NYSERDA Provides Funding for Four Clean Hydrogen R&D Projects

More than $1.2 million has been awarded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to four innovative projects focused on clean hydrogen research and development.

This funding comes through the Advanced Fuels and Thermal Energy Research Program and aims to demonstrate new designs for electrolyzers. These devices split water into hydrogen and oxygen and have the potential to lower costs, reduce supply chain risks, and decrease reliance on fossil fuels, especially in sectors like industry and transportation.

The awarded projects were chosen as part of NYSERDA’s Advanced Fuels and Thermal Energy Research Program, which supports innovation in clean fuel technology. The New York State companies benefiting from this funding will also leverage $18.3 million in federal support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) introduced in March 2024. The state’s contribution helps meet the cost requirements of the DOE awards.

Bettergy Corp., located in Peekskill, N.Y., received $167,000 to enhance membrane performance for anion exchange electrolyzer systems. Ecolectro, Inc. from Ithaca, N.Y., was awarded $720,000 to improve membranes using advanced polymers. Orion Polymer Corp. in Cohoes, N.Y., got $200,000 for developing conductive and durable solid membranes, while Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., received $187,000 to work on novel polymer membranes to reduce hydrogen crossover risks.

Leaders from these companies expressed gratitude to NYSERDA for their roles in advancing clean hydrogen technologies. They highlighted how the funding boosts the development of cost-effective and sustainable energy solutions that address environmental and economic goals.

New York’s commitment to clean energy innovation aligns with its ambitious climate goals. This funding supports the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, focusing on achieving economy-wide carbon neutrality. Local and state representatives praised the investments for propelling New York toward a sustainable future.
