Oman is set to inaugurate its first green hydrogen station in the future, marking a significant move towards clean and renewable energy regeneration.
Oman Shell is leading this initiative, which aligns with Oman’s aim for a sustainable energy transition and a Net Zero strategy.
The foundation stone for this landmark project will be placed during the Oman Sustainability Week (OSW) 2024, between April 28 and May 2. This high-profile event finds Oman Shell as a key strategic partner, highlighting its commitment to sustainable energy.
According to Malak al Shaibani, Oman Shell’s General Manager of External Relations, Eng Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, will oversee the foundation ceremony. Shaibani further revealed that hydrogen-fuelled cars would be available in Oman by the year-end.
This move originated from Oman Shell’s ‘Green Hydrogen for Mobility’ project, dubbed as the company’s 6th Gift to the Nation. It sought to provide Oman Airports’ corporate usage with up to 15 hydrogen cars, thereby promoting sustainability in its operations.
Scaling Up Development
The project also entails the production of hydrogen units powered by solar energy. Oman Shell aims to install these units across strategically chosen fueling stations for maximum project benefits and public exposure to this emerging technology.
The project will extend across constructing one hydrogen fuelling station, thereby stimulating a comprehensive development of a hydrogen economy in Oman. This approach involves fostering a collaborative environment with government bodies, energy companies, and infrastructure developers to establish regulatory frameworks.
Hydrogen-powered vehicles offer a greener alternative to traditional fossil-fuel vehicles, aligning with Oman’s environmental goals. Additionally, this project is set to diversify Oman’s energy sector, thereby lowering its dependence on fossil fuels and possibly streamlining its energy security and independence.
