Poland’s Office of Rail Transport (UTK) has granted approval for the Pesa hydrogen locomotive to enter operation.

This hydrogen-powered shunting locomotive represents a significant milestone in the development of zero-emission rail solutions. With a focus on reducing carbon emissions and advancing hydrogen technology, Pesa has collaborated with industry partners to create an innovative and sustainable transportation solution.

The Pesa hydrogen locomotive, based on the SM42 locomotive, has undergone modernization to incorporate equipment that enables hydrogen traction. This four-axle shunting locomotive, known as the 6Dn, features a zero-emission hydrogen drive powered by two hydrogen cells provided by Ballard. These cells, with a total capacity of 85 kW, generate energy through the chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen. The locomotive’s autonomous driving system and obstacle recognition system enhance operational efficiency and safety.

The approval process for the hydrogen locomotive presented unique challenges, as existing technical specifications and regulations did not specifically address hydrogen-powered rail vehicles. However, the Office of Rail Transport recognized the significance of this development and granted the necessary certificate. This decision showcases Poland’s commitment to embracing new technologies and driving sustainable transportation solutions.

The Pesa hydrogen locomotive is a significant step towards achieving zero-emission rail operations. As a shunting locomotive, it contributes to reducing carbon emissions in railway yards and stations. Pesa’s collaboration with PKN Orlen and PKP SA demonstrates a concerted effort to accelerate the introduction of hydrogen technology in Poland’s rail sector.

The approval of the hydrogen locomotive marks the first phase of Pesa’s broader plans to implement hydrogen technologies in rail vehicles. Building on the experience gained from this project, Pesa aims to develop a passenger vehicle with a hydrogen drive. The company’s ‘Green Pesa’ strategy focuses on minimizing the carbon footprint throughout the production and operation of rail vehicles, emphasizing sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The introduction of hydrogen locomotives has the potential to revolutionize rail transportation by significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The shift to hydrogen as an alternative fuel source can contribute to meeting climate change targets and improving air quality. However, challenges such as hydrogen infrastructure development, cost-effectiveness, and safety regulations need to be addressed to ensure the widespread adoption of this technology.
