The Hon Angus Taylor MP, Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction, announced that the Port of Newcastle Green Hydrogen Hub Project will receive $41 million in funding, giving it the vote of confidence.
The project is a joint venture between Macquarie Capital and Macquarie’s Green Investment Group, and an ARENA-funded feasibility study is currently underway. The project is being developed with a minimum 40MW electrolyser in phase one, with the potential to grow to a capacity of over 1 GW over time.
The project has been working with a variety of project partners to develop a broad range of green hydrogen use cases in the Hunter, based on the region’s strong industrial history. Mobility, bunkering, energy production, and industrial uses at the scale required to place the Hunter at the forefront of the global green hydrogen opportunity are among them.
With connectivity to domestic and export infrastructure, proximate demand, and access to renewable energy, the funding announcement positions the Port of Newcastle as a leading site for establishing a hydrogen hub.
