Through its participation in Floene Energias, Marubeni Corporation initiated the first green hydrogen injection demonstration project in Portugal’s natural gas distribution network.
With more than 70% of the market share in Portugal, Floene operates a gas distribution infrastructure.
In this demonstration project, Floene is distributing green hydrogen to a clientele at about 80 residential, commercial, and industrial locations by way of its recently built hydrogen pipeline, injecting it into its current natural gas network.
The green hydrogen used is created by a local business using solar energy to electrolyze water and split it into two halves. In order to meet the Portuguese government’s 2030 goal of a 10 to 15% injection ratio, Floene intends to expand its injection ratio up to 20% over a two-year trial period.
