During a meeting with Colombian citizens residing in Germany, President Gustavo Petro extended an invitation for them to return to Colombia and contribute their knowledge to the production and export of green hydrogen.

Petro emphasized the global climate crisis and the need for clean energy production and decarbonization. He highlighted the significance of negotiating an agreement with the German government to produce green hydrogen in Colombia and export it to other countries, requiring investments of $5-6 billion.

Petro stressed that Latin America, particularly Colombia, has a fundamental role in leading the change towards sustainable practices and clean energy. He emphasized Colombia’s exceptional conditions for clean energy production, including abundant water, sun, and wind resources. The President underscored the importance of the Amazon jungle in addressing the global climate crisis, stating that it represents the life of humanity.

The Colombian peninsula of La Guajira was highlighted as a region with exceptional potential for clean energy production due to its abundant wind resources. Petro expressed the desire for the indigenous Wayúu people to become partners in a green hydrogen production company, allowing them to benefit as a community while contributing to humanity with their sun and wind resources.

The President’s visit to Germany aims to forge an alliance with the German government, facilitated through Ecopetrol, to drive clean energy production. Petro emphasized the need for a partnership between the Colombian and German states, specifically for green hydrogen production. If an alliance is not possible, Petro expressed determination to pursue the production of green hydrogen independently.

During his visit, President Petro will meet with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and parliamentary directors to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. Additionally, he will engage with industry leaders in gas production, energy, infrastructure, steel, and telecommunications, as convened by the Federal Association of German Industry (BDI).

President Petro’s call for Colombian expatriates to contribute their knowledge and expertise in green hydrogen production reflects the growing importance of clean energy in addressing the climate crisis. Colombia’s abundant natural resources and potential for clean energy make it a key player in the global transition to sustainable practices.
