India’s ambitious National Green Hydrogen Mission has attracted major players like Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Tata Motors, and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to spearhead a pioneering green hydrogen (GH2) project.
Launched in January 2023 with a budget of Rs 19,744 crore, the National Green Hydrogen Mission seeks to harness renewable energy sources to produce clean and sustainable hydrogen fuel. The primary objective is to evaluate the feasibility and economic viability of GH2 production, transportation, storage, and utilization in India, thereby reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
GH2, produced using renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power, represents a significant technological advancement in India’s energy sector. The pilot project aims to address operational challenges and technology readiness gaps across the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to utilization in hydrogen-fueled vehicles. Cutting-edge innovations in electrolysis and hydrogen storage technologies will play a pivotal role in the project’s success.
The successful implementation of the GH2 project holds immense potential to revolutionize India’s energy landscape. By reducing dependency on fossil fuel imports and promoting domestic production of clean energy, the project aligns with the government’s objectives of decarbonizing the economy and achieving energy security. Furthermore, it positions India as a global leader in green hydrogen technology, fostering innovation, job creation, and economic growth.
