RWE and Haltermann Carless have joined forces to develop a green hydrogen plant in Harwich, Essex.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between RWE and Haltermann Carless outlines their intention to build a green hydrogen plant on Haltermann Carless’s industrial site in Harwich. The strategic location within Essex offers logistical advantages and aligns with Haltermann Carless’s commitment to sustainable product development, including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

Both companies have conducted feasibility studies for the green electrolyser plant, indicating a serious commitment to the project. However, the transition from feasibility to implementation poses challenges related to grid and water connections. Assessing these challenges and devising effective solutions will be crucial for the project’s success.

The clean hydrogen produced by the electrolyser plant holds the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions associated with Haltermann Carless’s operations. Moreover, it opens avenues for sustainably producing a broader range of products, aligning with the company’s sustainability objectives.

The collaboration between RWE and Haltermann Carless extends beyond environmental benefits to create local economic opportunities. The project is expected to generate employment, stimulate the supply chain, and foster the growth of green industries in the Harwich area. This aligns with the Government’s levelling up agenda and contributes to the UK’s net-zero ambitions.

As a major power producer in the UK, RWE brings extensive experience and knowledge to green hydrogen projects. With a diverse portfolio encompassing onshore and offshore wind, hydro, biomass, and gas, RWE is well-positioned to drive the transition towards green hydrogen. The company’s ambitious target of 2GW of green hydrogen electrolyser capacity by 2030 underscores its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
