The first fuel cell trucks have been created by Scania and will be delivered to customers Emmi AG, Genossenschaft Migros Zürich, Gysin Tiefbau AG, and TRAVECO Transporte AG.
In 2024 and 2025, the fuel cell trucks—whose working weights range from 40 to 70 tonnes—will be shipped to Switzerland. Gysin Tiefbau AG is a construction firm that delivers heavy machinery in the Basel region, Emmi AG is a dairy company, Genossenschaft Migros Zürich is a retailer, and TRAVECO Transporte AG is a national logistic company.
Scania has already created fuel cell trucks through research initiatives and partnerships. The Swiss trucks are Scania’s first to be offered for sale to consumers, though.
If hydrogen is created using renewable energy, it will play a significant part in the decarbonization of the energy system as it is a potential energy carrier and a suitable means to store renewable energy over long cycles.
