SK Gas has proudly announced its selection as one of five operators for general hydrogen power generation in the first half of 2023. This decision was revealed by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy on the 5th, marking a significant stride in Korea’s hydrogen energy ambitions.

Among the operators are Lotte SK Enerut, a joint venture initiated last September by SK Gas (11%), Lotte Chemical (45%), and Air Liquide Korea (45%). The venture focuses on by-product hydrogen-based power generation and transportation hydrogen business.

The centerpiece of Lotte SK Enerut’s venture is the establishment of a 10MW hydrogen fuel cell power plant at Lotte Chemical’s Ulsan plant. This state-of-the-art facility is set to operate for an impressive span of nine years, commencing in 2020. The venture’s strategic positioning has allowed it to secure a consistent supply of by-product hydrogen from SK Gas’ subsidiary and Lotte Chemical Group, ensuring the plant’s operational sustainability.

A highlight of this endeavor is its commitment to a carbon-neutral hydrogen-only model. This model not only eliminates carbon emissions but also demonstrates adaptability by enabling fuel conversion without substantial facility adjustments. Notably, the process contributes to environmental preservation by harnessing waste heat from fuel cells, further enhancing its eco-friendly profile.

Upon its completion, the hydrogen fuel cell power plant is projected to deliver approximately 20 MWh (megawatt hours) of clean energy annually. This substantial energy output has the potential to power around 4,400 households in Ulsan, positively impacting local communities and economies. The resultant surge in tax revenue and job creation stands as a testament to the multifaceted benefits of embracing sustainable energy practices.

CEO Yoon Byung-Seok of SK Gas expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “SK Energy’s selection as a hydrogen fuel cell power generation company is an opportunity for SK Gas’ hydrogen business to take a step forward.” He further affirmed the company’s dedication to cultivating a robust hydrogen value chain within Korea, fueled by continuous investment and unwavering dedication.

This bold endeavor by SK Gas and its partners not only pioneers eco-friendly power generation but also sets a powerful example of harnessing innovative technologies for a greener future. With hydrogen emerging as a game-changer in the energy sector, projects like Lotte SK Enerut’s hydrogen fuel cell power plant are propelling Korea towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape.
