With its consortium partner Midrex, the SMS group company Paul Wurth has been chosen to provide the first commercial 100% hydrogen Direct Reduction plant in the world to the Swedish company H2 Green Steel.
By substituting green hydrogen for coal, the new factory in Boden, northern Sweden, will be the first in the world to make green steel on a large scale.
This multibillion-euro project has an ambitious timetable. The goal is to begin steel production in 2025, followed by a ramp-up phase in 2026. More than 2.5 million tons of green steel will be produced annually at first.
