Sonatrach and Eni signed a memorandum of agreement in Rome aimed at speeding up the development of gas reserves discovered in Algeria and lowering carbon emissions through the use of green hydrogen.
The memorandum of understanding was signed by Toufik Hakkar, CEO of the Sonatrach Group, and Claudio Descalzi, general manager of the Italian Eni Group, during a ceremony attended by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, and this, as part of the President of the Republic’s State visit to Italy, emphasizes the same source.
“The memorandum of understanding agreed today between the two sides is a fresh stone contributed to the construction of productive collaboration in the sector of energy between Algeria and Italy,” according to the statement.
According to the same source, this memorandum of agreement will enable an assessment of existing gas capacity in order to carry out the “rapid” development of Sonatrach’s resources.
Sonatrach forecasts that the volume of gas generated from the territories covered by this agreement will be around 3 billion cubic meters per year “would therefore contribute to enhancing Algeria’s export capability to Italy via the Enrico Matte/Transmed transcontinental gas pipeline.”
This deal will also cover a technical and economic assessment of the Bir Rebaa North field’s experimental green hydrogen project, which attempts to minimize the carbon footprint created by the gas production unit there.
Furthermore, “This agreement is in keeping with Sonatrach’s sustainable growth plan, which calls for the development of technology that has a good influence on the environment, as well as initiatives that allow the Group’s carbon footprint to be reduced,” according to the press statement.
