SSE and EET Partner on Hydrogen Facility

SSE and EET Hydrogen have teamed up to develop a green hydrogen production facility at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. The Gowy Green Hydrogen project is named after the nearby Gowy River and Gowy Meadows Nature Reserve.

40MWe Facility Planned

The facility is expected to have an initial capacity of 40MWe. It aims to supply hydrogen to industrial users, helping them reduce carbon emissions and creating local jobs. The UK is committed to producing low-carbon hydrogen, targeting 10GW by 2030. Low-carbon hydrogen is crucial for a clean energy system and for enabling industries that are difficult to decarbonize to lower their carbon footprint.

Timeline for Completion

Gowy Green Hydrogen could be operational by 2028. Feasibility studies are complete, and design and site investigation are underway. A planning application is expected in 2025, before the final investment decision.

Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, said, “Our mission is to be the leading low-carbon hydrogen business in the UK, and Gowy Green is a great addition to our existing flagship projects. We are delighted to partner with SSE as the North West continues to lead in decarbonising industry and power through low-carbon hydrogen.”

Hannah Bronwin, Director of Business Development for SSE Thermal, added, “Scaling up green hydrogen production will be critical for decarbonising hard-to-abate industries and solving the clean power puzzle. We’re excited to collaborate with EET Hydrogen to develop Gowy Green Hydrogen, which can help ensure much-needed hydrogen production capacity in this important energy transition region.”

SSE’s Hydrogen Initiatives

SSE is working on various hydrogen projects, including producing green and blue hydrogen, hydrogen storage, and hydrogen power generation.
