Energy giant SSE has suggested using extra electricity generated by a Highland wind farm to produce 1,600 tonnes of hydrogen annually.
The hydrogen could serve as an alternate fuel for industrial processes, heating systems, and transportation. At its Gordonbush Wind Farm near Brora in Sutherland, SSE has informed Highland Council’s north planning applications committee of its intention to construct a hydrogen electrolyser facility.
Electricity left over after meeting the demands of the national power system would be used to power the facility. Separately, comparable initiatives have been suggested for locations in Inverness, the Western Isles, and Easter Ross on the Cromarty Firth.
