StormFisher Hydrogen has commissioned MAN Energy Solutions to deliver the pre-front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) for a methanation reactor as part of a 200 MW Power-to-X plant in North America.

The facility, which will produce green hydrogen and e-methane using a local biogenic CO₂ source, is expected to generate 2.5 million MMBtu of e-methane annually—equivalent to approximately 50,000 metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This project marks a significant step in advancing North America’s e-fuel production capacity and underscores the region’s potential to lead in the global energy transition.

The 200 MW Power-to-X plant is a cornerstone of StormFisher Hydrogen’s strategy to scale e-fuel production in North America. By leveraging renewable electricity from wind and solar, the facility will produce green hydrogen through electrolysis, which will then be converted into e-methane using MAN Energy Solutions’ methanation technology.

One of the key advantages of the project is its ability to integrate e-methane into existing natural gas infrastructure. The facility’s output will meet North American pipeline standards, enabling seamless distribution and utilization. This approach not only reduces infrastructure costs but also accelerates the adoption of e-methane as a scalable decarbonization solution.

As part of the pre-FEED study, MAN Energy Solutions will conduct in-house tests at its Deggendorf, Germany, facility to validate a quality booster—an enhancement to its methanation technology. This innovation is designed to increase methane purity by reducing unreacted components in the e-methane output, ensuring higher-quality fuel that meets stringent industry standards.

The 200 MW Power-to-X plant is poised to play a pivotal role in North America’s energy transition. By producing green hydrogen and e-methane, the facility will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industry and transportation. The project also aligns with broader efforts to enhance energy security and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
