The potential of hydrogen fuel in Egypt

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Egypt convened a workshop with representatives from the Ministries of Electricity and Renewable Energy and Petroleum and Mineral Resources to explore the state and potential of hydrogen fuel in Egypt.

As the globe grapples with climate change, several governments are pledging to decarbonize, which will necessitate a variety of activities across many economic sectors.

Japan has likewise committed to being carbon neutral by 2050 and is taking steps to cut emissions. As JICA Chief Representative Omura Yoshifumi mentioned during his introductory remarks, the JICA has played a role in boosting energy efficiency and climate change mitigation.

Various government officials, international financing organizations, Japanese corporations, private sector firms, and academic institutions took part in the session.

The event highlighted Egypt’s tremendous potential and competitiveness in hydrogen development, as well as its derivatives and diverse applications, as well as its value chain.

It also considered obstacles to implementation, such as policymaking, developing the necessary infrastructure, governance and market arrangements, and the legal and regulatory framework, as well as possible collaboration with the JICA, given Japan’s expertise in this area.

It was a fruitful discussion that prepared the way for more climate change solutions, particularly as Egypt prepares to host the United Nations Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP 27) in Sharm El-Sheikh next November.

LYNX Business Advisers, a consultant commissioned by the JICA to conduct a survey on the issue, co-organized and moderated the event.
