South Korean companies showcase hydrogen products in North America

During the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Seminar (HFCS) in North America from February 7 to 9, the South Korean energy ministry and several significant businesses, including Hyundai Motor Co., SK E&S, and Korea Zinc Co., displayed their hydrogen products and expansion plans.

The HFCS, the largest hydrogen industry event in North America with more than 40 years of experience, offers a forum for international business interaction and includes lectures on themes related to the hydrogen sector as well as technological demonstrations by more than 70 companies and organizations.

At a joint public-private investment briefing, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy announced its ambitions to build the largest liquefied hydrogen plant in the world in South Korea this year and to make commercial hydrogen vehicles more widely available.

Domestic companies including Hyundai Motor and SK E&S will present their hydrogen products and ambitions to visitors from governments and enterprises globally during the host country’s representative session.


First Mode develops mining truck powered by hydrogen

The London-based startup First Mode has a massive mining machine that runs on hydrogen rather than diesel.

The vehicle is three stories tall and weighs around 210 tons. For mining company Anglo American, First Mode created a CO2-neutral truck. The truck is employed at Anglo American’s platinum mine at Mogalakwena, South Africa.

The vehicles are powered by around two megawatts. That is what around 1,000 to 1,500 homes utilize concurrently. First, Mode created a truck that runs on a battery and a hydrogen fuel cell. As a result, only one truck reduces CO2 emissions by 2,700 tons per year. That is equivalent to 700 passenger cars.


German program selects Brazilian startups to promote green hydrogen

According to a research by the German consultant Roland Berger, which was released in January, Brazil could achieve revenues of R$ 150 billion annually in the green hydrogen (H2V) market in order to uphold its obligations under the Paris Agreement to cut gas emissions.

A few unique solutions aimed at the green hydrogen industry are already being presented by Brazilian startups. The Green Hydrogen Innovation Program, an initiative of the Brazil-German Cooperation for Sustainable Development through the H2Brasil project, just selected eight of them.

The program, a collaboration between the governments of Germany and Brazil, intends to increase the market for green hydrogen in that country, replacing fossil fuels and assisting in the creation of jobs, professional qualifications, and new ideas and projects.

Following are eight startups with chosen green hydrogen projects:

  • Green Power Sources Technologies aims to turn biomass leftovers into biofuels/bioenergy.
  • Open Sustainable Solutions: Open Sustainable Solutions invests in sustainable fuels and plans to manufacture green diesel (HVO, HBO), biokerosene (BioQAV), and renewables from hydrogen on a biorefining platform (“Plataforma Bio”).
  • GreenEnergy: GreenEnergy proposes to use sustainable technology to convert agro-industrial waste into green fuels such as green hydrogen.
  • Sanaergya is a company that attempts to enhance biogas with green hydrogen.
  • Phama Energias Renováveis is developing a factory to manufacture fertilizers from green hydrogen and ammonia generated by photovoltaic energy.
  • NanoInk proposes to create nanotechnological inks for the creation of green hydrogen-generating systems.
  • Shareenergy: Shareenergy wants to accelerate the development of a platform that monitors H2V-based energy storage systems in order to improve decision-making in the management of renewable energy assets by providing greater control, productivity, and practicability.
  • H2LAW proposes to create a digital platform with the goal of creating a legal framework for all options for the generation, storage, and exploitation of green hydrogen in Brazil.

UPC Hydrogen Laboratory to open in June

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC) Hydrogen Laboratory will open in June when the first phase of construction is completed.

The new infrastructure will create new technologies based on green hydrogen, offer a demonstration of green hydrogen technology for the business sector and academics, and provide technical support and durability testing to the industry.

A hydrogen production pilot plant erected on the building’s top will supply the hydrogen and power used in the laboratory in a local, sustainable, and modular manner.

The prototype plant will produce the green hydrogen required for the laboratory studies. The areas of production, compression, transport, storage, and usage of hydrogen will all be the focus of laboratory research. The European Regional Development Funds have provided more than one million euros for the construction of this infrastructure (ERDF).

These traits and flexibility allow offshore wind turbine operators to produce green hydrogen and renewable energy with a future-proof CSOV design.

Hydrocat 48 won Offshore Energy Vessel of the Year. Our design and operation won awards. Hydrocat 48 is the first hydrogen-powered personnel transfer vehicle. The Windcat Mk 3.5 was enhanced with hydrogen dual-fuel engines. CMB.TECH added hydrogen injection to the MAN D2862 LE428 dual-fuel engine.
