Cleveland-Cliffs completed its Middletown Works blast furnace hydrogen infusion trial. Hydrogen gas is the first carbon-friendly iron-reducing agent used in the blast furnace in the Americas.
Hydrogen gas is a major step in decarbonizing blast furnaces, which are needed for the highest-quality steel applications, such as automotive.
On 8 May, hydrogen gas was introduced into all 20 tuyeres at the Middletown #3 blast furnace to produce clean pig iron, the foundation of high-end steelmaking. Hydrogen partially replaced coke in iron reduction, replacing CO2 with H2O (water vapor) without affecting product quality or efficiency.
The Middletown facility’s pipeline and transportation system delivered hydrogen for its annealing furnaces and other hydrogen uses.
Viritech supports Ford’s three-year hydrogen fuel cell E-Transit trial
Viritech will play a major part in one of the UK’s largest fuel cell hydrogen electric vehicle (FCHEV) projects, a Ford Transit fuel-cell feasibility test.
FCHEV, a zero-emissions alternative to BEVs, can meet LCV use-cases that require high payloads, high daily energy consumption, extended range, or limited charging.
Viritech will use its integrated mounting method to produce hydrogen pressure vessels that minimize vehicle weight and cost. External attachments increase weight, complexity, and cost to pressure vessels. Viritech’s innovative Graph-Pro design integrates mountings into the pressure vessel structure so they may be fastened directly to the chassis.
Viritech will create Type 5 hydrogen pressure vessels. Due to the elimination of the inner tank liner, these may reduce weight significantly.
Vattenfall and Cara Delevingne create facial mist with fossil-free hydrogen emissions
Cara Delevingne, a British model, actress, and climate activist, teams up with Vattenfall to introduce the first-ever “Industrial Emissions Face Mist”. The face mist is a strategy to draw attention to one method of lowering greenhouse gas emissions, in this example, using hydrogen produced without the use of fossil fuels.
The goal of the partnership between Cara Delevingne and Vattenfall is to raise awareness of the value of fossil-free hydrogen, a fuel that when burned generates water instead of carbon dioxide. The facial mist is produced with hydrogen that doesn’t come from fossil fuels using genuine industry waste water. The emissions are so pure that you may use them to spray a cooling facial mist on your face.
Particularly in sectors like steel production, which accounts for 7% of global carbon dioxide emissions, fossil-free hydrogen has the potential to decarbonize entire industries and so drastically reduce carbon emissions.
Petroleum Division creates green hydrogen roadmap concept note
Petroleum Division (PD) has published a concept note to build a nationwide roadmap for green hydrogen for transportation, power production, and industrial activities.

Air Liquide constructs Japan taxi hydrogen fuel station
To encourage the use of FCVs among commercial vehicles, Air Liquide developed a hydrogen filling station in Japan that will operate on Wednesday and accommodate fuel cell vehicle taxis.
A liquefied petroleum (LP) gas station in Kobe was transformed by Air Liquide into a hydrogen refueling station. It looks to be the country’s first hydrogen taxi refueling station and has being run by the Kobe MK taxi service.
Kaptur and Latta support Great Lakes Clean Hydrogen Hub
Bipartisan lawmakers from Ohio and Michigan led by Representatives Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) and Bob Latta (OH-05) have asked Jennifer Granholm of the US Department of Energy to support a plan for the Great Lakes Clean Hydrogen Hub (GLCH). The plan, created in response to a sustainable energy demonstration project established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, would provide funding for hydrogen production, delivery, storage, and usage throughout the Great Lakes Region.
In accordance with the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the GLCH has submitted a complete application for government funding from the DOE program of the U.S. Department of Energy. A $2 billion project to build a clean hydrogen hub serving Ohio, Michigan, and parts of Pennsylvania and Indiana is described in detail in GLCH’s complete proposal. The proposed center will generate clean hydrogen at a competitive price using carbon-free nuclear power. It will make use of production techniques that have already been proven effective, has a well defined scope, and will shorten the time needed to reach maximum output of 100+ metric tons of hydrogen per day.
Symbio gets $9M funding to build hydrogen fuel cell tech
Symbio North America has received a $9 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to help finance the construction of a new industrial facility in Temecula, California, for the production of hydrogen fuel cell vehicle power systems and vehicle assembly.
According to Symbio, their fuel cell technology shortens the time needed to refill a car to 3 to 5 minutes and increases range without sacrificing performance, payload, or capacity. The Temecula 32,000 square foot plant, which over the course of three years will generate 63 permanent manufacturing employees, will construct regional heavy-duty Class 8 trucks, medium-duty fuel cell vehicles, and fuel cell power systems. It is anticipated to be operational by 2024, with a maximum manufacturing capacity of 250 trucks and 2,000 fuel cell power systems annually, enabling the industry to hasten the deployment of hydrogen-powered zero-emission heavy-duty mobility in California.
The CEC funding will assist Symbio in expanding its U.S. production capabilities and help it to fulfill the OEMs’ increasing interest in and demand for clean mobility technology.
Bramble Energy lead partner of HEIDI project
A novel hydrogen double-deck bus that incorporates Bramble Energy’s low-cost printed circuit board fuel cell (PCBFC) technology has been developed in collaboration with Equipmake, Aeristech, and the University of Bath. Bramble Energy is a pioneer in fuel cell technology. (Previous post.)
The Hydrogen Electric Integrated Drivetrain Initiative (HEIDI), which has been awarded £6.3 million in financing from the Advance Propulsion Centre as part of the Automotive Transformation Fund, is being spearheaded by Bramble Energy. Government funding totaling £6.3 million will be matched by industry funding totaling £12.7 million.
Using first-of-its-kind fuel cell technology from Bramble Energy, a high efficiency air compressor from Aeristech, and motor power electronics and a battery management system from Equipmake, the UK-based collaboration will create a hydrogen-powered double-deck bus. The University of Bath’s vehicle simulations will be used to optimize the powertrain.
SMST to deliver equipment for Windcat CSOVs fueled by hydrogen
Damen Shipyards has awarded SMST a contract for the delivery of two sets of mission equipment for Windcat Offshore’s two new Elevation Series CSOVs.
SMST is a major contributor to the increased flexibility and capability of the hydrogen-powered Commissioning Service Operation Vessels, which have already been praised for their revolutionary design, by delivering a gangway (Telescopic Access Bridge L-Series) combined with Access & Cargo Tower and the world’s largest 3D Motion Compensated Crane.
Damen Shipyards collaborated with Windcat and CMB.TECH to design the Elevation Series CSOVs.
The SMST mission equipment, which will be used on board the CSOVs beginning in 2025, includes the world’s largest 3D crane, a 10t 3D motion compensated crane.
The Elevation Series vessels are fueled by hydrogen to considerably reduce their CO2 footprint. SMST’s most energy-efficient mission equipment to date contributes to ‘green’ CSOVs.
IIT Roorkee Director Launches Renewable Grid Integration and Green Hydrogen Labs
The Renewable Grid Integration Laboratory and Green Hydrogen Laboratory were launched by IIT Roorkee Director Prof. K.K. Pant.
These labs focus on a stable, resilient, and self-reliant grid to keep IIT Roorkee at the forefront of India’s renewable energy transformation.
Prof. Pant visited HRED labs conducting transformational research in hydropower, energy storage, solar energy, biomass energy, water body management, and energy systems modeling. Profs. Pant and UP Singh discussed the labs with Profs. Arun Kumar and Sunil Singhal.
Prof. Pant encouraged teachers and students to reduce carbon emissions and use renewable energy to make India a global leader in green hydrogen production and export. He stated that net-zero carbon ambitions require electric grid decarbonization and resilient renewable energy-based power systems.
