UK Utility Giant SSE Trials First Hydrogen’s Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

First Hydrogen has delivered its hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) to UK utility company SSE . This marks SSE as the first utility company to trial the FCEV, which will undergo field testing in Aberdeen, Scotland, a region known for its robust hydrogen infrastructure.

The FCEV offers the advantage of quick refueling, taking only 5-7 minutes compared to hours required for battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs).

SSE, the largest low-carbon energy infrastructure company in the UK, recognizes the importance of decarbonizing transport in achieving net zero emissions. As part of their commitment, SSE plans to electrify 2,500 of its vehicles. The FCEV trial will gather valuable data on fuel consumption, usage, and efficiency to assess the total cost of ownership, a crucial consideration for fleet operators.

The trial is coordinated by the Aggregated Hydrogen Freight Consortium (AHFC), which aims to accelerate the deployment of a hydrogen-based transport system. Sixteen major fleet operators, spanning industries such as grocery, energy, parcel delivery, and healthcare, have expressed interest in testing the First Hydrogen vehicle. The collaboration highlights the growing momentum behind hydrogen as a viable alternative fuel.

Steve Gill, CEO Automotive at First Hydrogen, expressed enthusiasm for partnering with SSE, a leader in clean energy transition and decarbonization. The transition to a fossil-free transport system is a significant step toward achieving net-zero emissions, and supporting SSE’s journey aligns with this goal. Gill also acknowledged Aberdeen’s commitment to hydrogen promotion, making it an ideal location for the FCEV trial.

Ronnie Fleming, Chief Procurement Officer at SSE, emphasized their commitment to net zero and the exploration of alternative fuels for their fleet. SSE aims to evaluate how hydrogen vehicles can integrate into their future fleets, providing drivers with hands-on experience and enabling fleet managers to assess their suitability.
