The design of the hydrogen-electric tram, which will make its debut in Korea, as well as the brand image that will be used in the future, were presented. The vehicle’s maker, Hyundai Rotem, aims to begin manufacturing in October of this year and demonstrations in September of 2023.
Ulsan City convened a press conference in the situation room on the 7th floor of the city hall main building to discuss hydrogen-electric tram design and brand image.
Hyundai Rotem’s hydrogen-electric tram measures 35 meters in length, 2.65 meters in width, and 3.7 meters in height, with a total of five compartments. The vehicle’s floor height is 35 centimeters above the ground, and its top speed is 70 kilometers per hour.
Ulsan’s energy is combined with eco-friendly trends to produce a sleek and stylish form that perfectly blends soft surfaces and lines. The trademark light, which is on at all times of the day and night, was used to represent future hydrogen transportation, and safety was expressed by addressing pedestrian collisions and ensuring the driver’s vision.
We brought the notion of activity and leisure coexisting in the interior, with an emphasis on the pleasant lounge space. The seating arrangement provided both utilitarian and aesthetic benefits. Additionally, information delivery facilities and wireless charging stations are available to effectively transmit diverse information to passengers, maximizing convenience.
Hyundai Rotem will finish comprehensive vehicle design by September of next year and begin producing the car in October of that year, based on the design. It aims to run more than 2,500 kilometers of the Ulsan Port Line (Taehwagang Station – Ulsan Port Station) as a demonstration route starting in September 2023.
Ulsan Tram’s vehicle design, brand pictures, and keywords incorporating identity were also provided for constant advertising. The letters ‘tram’ is succinctly conveyed in modern Korean, and the characters’ green hue represents the most environmentally benign green hydrogen created by floating offshore wind power.
“If the hydrogen-electric tram is validated through the demonstration project,” an Ulsan City official stated, “we want to completely evaluate it and actively utilize it for the implementation of the Ulsan tram.”
Meanwhile, the hydrogen-electric tram demonstration project, which was finally selected in the public offering by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy in July, is expected to be completed in 2023 with a total cost of 42 billion won, including 28.2 billion won in government funding and 2 billion won in municipal expenses.
