Universal Hydrogen, a leader in hydrogen fuel services, has reached a significant milestone in the world of sustainable aviation. The company recently completed an operational demonstration at Toulouse Airport, showcasing its unique modular hydrogen capsule technology and an innovative hydrogen fueling logistics solution.
At the heart of Universal Hydrogen’s breakthrough is its revolutionary modular hydrogen capsule technology. This innovation promises to transform how hydrogen is used in aviation and ground support operations. During the demonstration, Universal Hydrogen successfully loaded and unloaded these modular hydrogen capsules on its ATR-72 test aircraft. This critical step simulated a turnaround procedure, a process essential for aviation operations.
The event was attended by airlines, airports, regulatory authorities, and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) participating in the Airport Compatibility of Alternative Aviation Fuels Task Force (ACAAF TF). This task force, backed by the Airport Council International World (ACI), is dedicated to advancing new technologies at airports, specifically technologies that contribute to environmental sustainability.
The demonstration holds immense promise for the aviation industry’s journey toward greener solutions, which are essential for its continued sustainable growth. Green hydrogen plays a pivotal role in reducing the carbon footprint of the aviation sector. As the world pushes for decarbonization, the aviation industry is under pressure to adopt more sustainable practices. Universal Hydrogen’s modular capsules can significantly contribute to this endeavor.
The live demonstration on the ATR-72 aircraft involved loading and unloading the modular hydrogen capsules at Toulouse Blagnac Airport. This process simulated a turnaround, and it showcased the seamless collaboration between the airport, safety and security partners, and the ground handling company, Groupe 3S. The smooth execution of this demonstration highlights the industry’s commitment to embracing green hydrogen technology.
In addition to the breakthrough in aviation, Universal Hydrogen also unveiled its H2AmpCart™, a mobile battery charger for electric ground support equipment (GSE). This charger is powered by hydrogen fuel cells and is being developed in collaboration with JBT AeroTech. What makes this solution truly groundbreaking is that it eliminates the need for expensive airport infrastructure investments.
Universal Hydrogen’s hydrogen modules for the H2AmpCart are filled with green hydrogen away from the airport. They are then transported to the airport, where they facilitate on-the-spot charging of electric GSEs. By bringing hydrogen and charging directly to the equipment on the airport aprons, the need for long-distance travel to central charging stations is eliminated. This approach optimizes GSE operations and reduces downtime.
