UPV/EHU Leads European Project to Advance Green Hydrogen Technology

The University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) is leading the European project UnLOHCked, which aims to develop a more efficient technology for storing and transporting green hydrogen. The project is headed by the Supren research group and has received €3 million in funding from the EU.

The project is developing a new technology that will enable green hydrogen to be stored and transported more efficiently using Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHCs). LOHCs are organic compounds that can absorb and release hydrogen through chemical reactions.

The new technology will be based on the use of catalysts that do not require critical raw materials (CRMs). CRMs are raw materials that are considered to be relevant due to their cost or the risk that an interruption in their supply would entail.

The project is expected to have a significant impact on the development of the green hydrogen economy. By making green hydrogen storage and transportation more efficient, the project will help to reduce the cost of green hydrogen and make it more competitive with fossil fuels.

The successful development of the UnLOHCked project could have a major impact on the transition to a clean energy economy. Green hydrogen is a promising fuel source for a variety of applications, including transportation, power generation, and industrial processes.
