Veidekke is collaborating with Norwegian Hydrogen to enhance the production of green hydrogen, a critical component in sustaining the hydrogen-powered asphalt plant.
Veidekke has achieved a significant milestone with the world’s first factory capable of producing asphalt solely using hydrogen as an energy source. Located in Kristiansund, this innovative venture is not only setting a new standard for the construction industry but is also a commendable stride in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions.
The primary goal of this pioneering project is to revolutionize asphalt production by eliminating traditional energy sources like gas, propane, diesel, biodiesel, and wood pellets, all of which contribute to climate emissions. Veidekke’s converted factory in Kristiansund produced approximately 3,000 tons of hydrogen-powered asphalt in 2023. The company now aims to scale up its production of emission-free asphalt in 2024.
Norwegian Hydrogen is constructing a production facility in Hellesylt, expected to be operational in 2024, with an annual capacity exceeding 400 tons. This facility will supply hydrogen to Veidekke’s Kristiansund plant, ensuring a continuous and sustainable energy source.
Traditional asphalt production methods contribute significantly to climate change, with total emissions from Norwegian asphalt production reaching around 400,000 tons of CO2 per year. By transitioning to hydrogen as the sole energy source, Veidekke’s initiative is poised to make substantial strides in reducing carbon footprints associated with asphalt manufacturing.
