Vikram Solar Ventures into Battery Manufacturing with New Solid-State Facility

Vikram Solar, a leading Indian photovoltaic (PV) manufacturer, plans to establish a 1 GWh solid-state battery manufacturing facility, with prospects for expansion up to 5 GWh.

This development is as strategic as it is timely, aligning with both national and global trends demanding more robust and diversified energy storage solutions. The facility reinforces the company’s commitment to India’s self-reliance and renewable energy ambitions, underscoring the importance of energy independence in today’s rapidly evolving market.

The choice to focus on solid-state batteries highlights the growing industrial shift towards technologies that offer significant improvements in safety and performance. Compared to traditional lithium-based solutions, solid-state batteries mitigate risks such as overheating and combustion, providing a safer alternative due to their unique chemical architecture which combats dendrite formation and therefore increases lifespan and stability.

Vikram Solar’s push into this sector is bolstered by its collaboration with Entity2 Energy Storage, a firm with a strong patent portfolio in non-lithium battery technologies. This partnership aims to cater to a surging demand for scalable and efficient battery solutions designed to meet diverse energy needs, particularly in a market that is pivotal to executing India’s broader climate and renewable policies. Securing a steady supply chain is pivotal, and Vikram Solar achieves this by localizing its production, thereby reducing supply disruptions and supporting domestic industry.

Analytical insights presented in a recent CRISIL report underscore the pressing necessity for innovative energy storage systems. As of now, renewable resources account for a mere 15-20% of India’s total energy consumption. With the government targeting a 50% contribution from renewables by 2030, the gap clearly highlights the vital role that battery storage will play. To meet these ambitious goals, an estimated 23-24 GW yield capacity in battery energy storage systems is anticipated between 2025 and 2030. Vikram Solar’s PowerHive solution is poised to be at the forefront of this paradigm shift.

The company’s strategic positioning in the renewable energy landscape is further solidified by its cumulative 4.5 GW production capacity and recognition as a ‘Top Performer’ in PVEL’s PV Module Reliability scorecard. Bloomberg NEF’s listing of Vikram Solar among Tier 1 solar PV module manufacturers reaffirms its stature in the industry, giving it a competitive edge in the burgeoning global clean energy market.
