A significant step forward in green hydrogen development was taken as VNG AG signed a letter of intent in Oran, Algeria. The agreement involves Algerian energy companies Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, alongside European partners SNAM, SeaCorridor, and VERBUND.

The main goal is to assess the feasibility of producing large-scale green hydrogen in Algeria and exporting it to Europe via the planned “South H2 Corridor.”

The partnership, which includes key players in the energy sector from Algeria, Italy, and Austria, will focus on exploring both the technical and economic aspects of the green hydrogen value chain. As part of this agreement, the companies will work together to conduct the necessary studies that will determine the viability of the project.

Hans-Joachim Polk, VNG AG’s Board Member for Infrastructure and Technology, expressed his enthusiasm for the agreement, stating, “After VNG signed a supply contract for Algerian pipeline gas at the beginning of the year, we are delighted to have laid the foundation for a broadly based hydrogen partnership today. Algeria has enormous potential in the production of this future energy source and is therefore an important partner for us. If we can source green hydrogen from Algeria, we will diversify our corporate supply portfolio and make an important contribution to future security of supply with decarbonised gases. I am especially pleased that we will be undertaking project jointly with Algerian, Italian and Austrian partners. International cooperation will play an essential role in rolling out the hydrogen economy in Germany and the rest of Europe, because the demand for hydrogen cannot be met by domestic production alone.”

This agreement could mark a vital milestone in Europe’s quest for sustainable energy, as local production of hydrogen won’t be enough to meet future demands. Partnerships like this are set to play a pivotal role in ensuring the security and growth of green hydrogen in Europe.
