Wärtsilä’s ongoing collaboration with EDF Renewables UK and Ireland marks a significant stride in the UK’s clean energy transition, targeting 2030 for substantial advancements.
This partnership will culminate in a total energy storage capacity of 404.5 MW/709 MWh across eight facilities, augmenting the UK’s drive towards sustainable energy. Among these, notable projects such as the 50 MW/100 MWh Sundon in Bedfordshire and the 57 MW/114 MWh Bramford in Suffolk have recently become operational, playing a crucial role in supporting renewable energy integration into the national grid.
The strategic deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESS) by EDF Renewables, facilitated by Wärtsilä, illustrates a critical technological intervention for enhancing grid stability amidst rising renewable generation. This initiative underscores the role of BESS in correcting grid volatility by buffering energy supply discrepancies inherent to renewable sources like wind and solar. EDF’s Head of Storage, Simone Sullivan, highlights the dual advantages of these systems: optimization of renewable energy utilization and bolstered grid reliability, achieved through adept data management.
With two additional projects in Cornwall and Greater Manchester set for completion between late 2025 and mid-2026, Wärtsilä advances its service agreement strategy.
