Heliogen and Woodside Energy (USA) have agreed to build a commercial-scale demonstration of Heliogen’s AI-enabled concentrated solar energy technology.
Woodside granted Heliogen a Limited Notice to Proceed (LNTP) to begin procurement of key equipment for the deployment of a commercial-scale, single-module 5 megawatt electric (5 MWe) facility. The Project Agreement follows the previously announced LNTP. Construction is expected to begin as soon as the permits are approved, as Heliogen will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction.
This agreement includes Heliogen’s US$39 million award from the US Department of Energy for the deployment of Heliogen’s renewable energy technology in California, which was previously announced. Additionally, Heliogen’s 5 MWe module will be demonstrated commercially, as well as an innovative approach to converting thermal energy from Heliogen’s facility into power, which has the potential to deliver higher efficiencies and smaller footprints than traditional steam turbines.
Both Heliogen and Woodside Energy Technologies have signed a collaboration agreement, which will allow them to jointly market Heliogen’s technology in Australia. According to this agreement, Heliogen and Woodside will define product offerings for potential Australian customers using Heliogen’s modular technology and will create a roadmap to identify and engage with these customers. Additional commercial-scale modules of Heliogen’s heat and power offerings may be combined with a hydrogen offering in the Australian Collaboration Agreement, enhancing Woodside’s role in the transition to lower carbon energy sources. Heliogen’s technology is also the subject of similar discussions between the two companies in the United States.
