Yara International has opened its new ammonia import terminal in Brunsbüttel, Germany.
Situated at a strategic location on the North Sea and Kiel Canal, the terminal is set to become a crucial hub for low-emission ammonia imports to Europe, with the capacity to handle up to three million tonnes annually.
Germany has ambitious targets for its energy transition, and Yara’s new terminal in Brunsbüttel is poised to play a key role in supporting those goals. By facilitating the import of low-carbon ammonia, Yara is positioning itself to contribute significantly to the nation’s hydrogen strategy. The terminal can provide up to 530,000 tonnes of hydrogen each year, accounting for around 5% of Europe’s hydrogen target for 2030.
The Brunsbüttel terminal’s location is not only ideal for Germany but has the potential to serve as a central hub for Europe’s hydrogen economy.
This development aligns with Germany’s increasing need for low-emission ammonia. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection estimates that by 2030, up to 70% of the country’s ammonia needs will be met through imports, with demand expected to rise further in the years following.
The opening of the ammonia import terminal at Brunsbüttel represents a significant step for both Yara and the wider hydrogen economy.
