According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency, China’s Zhangjiakou city will deploy 655 hydrogen-fueled buses in the competition zone for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, has pledged to host a “green” Olympics by utilizing advanced technologies to mitigate carbon emissions.
Additionally, it is supplying cleaner energy to all event venues in Beijing and the neighboring city of Zhangjiakou via natural gas, renewables, and hydrogen.
Zhangjiakou, which will host Alpine skiing and snowboarding events, currently has two hydrogen reactors with a total daily production capacity of 6 tonnes and eight hydrogen refueling stations.
Prior to the start of the Winter Olympics Games in February, the city aimed to establish an annual hydrogen production capacity of 100,000 tonnes, or 27.4 tonnes per day, in 2019.
The Chinese government and energy companies such as China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and Sinopec have been working to make the Winter Olympics a showcase for next-generation fuels and to expand the country’s hydrogen industry, as the country strives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
