The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy announced on 5 October 2026 a funding opportunity of up to $50 million over three years to develop silicon carbide fuel cladding. The money targets fabrication of 12 foot silicon carbide cladding fuel rods for irradiation testing in research reactors. Applications are due by 7 December 2026.

What the notice says

DOE describes silicon carbide as an advanced cladding material able to withstand extreme conditions inside a reactor, with potential gains in safety and lower operating costs. Cladding is the sealed metal tube that holds uranium fuel pellets and separates them from reactor coolant. The funding is aimed at the existing light water reactor fleet, which DOE calls the largest in the world.

The stated purpose is the next maturation step: producing rods long enough to test in research reactors, so that irradiation performance data can be generated. DOE says that data is required for U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing and commercial deployment of the material.

ENB calculation: what $50 million means per year

Spread evenly over three years, the ceiling is about $16.7 million a year (ENB calculation, even spread assumed). The notice does not state how many awards will be made, the maximum per award or any cost share requirement, so the figure per team cannot be derived.

Next dated checks

  • 7 December 2026: applications due, 61 days after the announcement (ENB calculation).
  • Award announcements: no date given in the notice.
  • NRC licensing of the cladding: DOE says irradiation data is a prerequisite, with no date given.
