Bilfinger and Hydrogenious become partners

Bilfinger, a leading multinational industrial service provider, and Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies (“Hydrogenious LOHC”) form a strategic alliance to pool their complementary expertise.

The firms aim to economically enable the use of green hydrogen on a wide scale in Europe by supplying a turnkey, stationary Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) system infrastructure based on Hydrogenious’ proprietary technology. The partners seek to provide engineering, procurement, construction (EPC), and maintenance services to the owners or operators of these hydrogen storage and release systems.

“As a long-term partner at eye level, we would like to contribute to further drive the energy transition,” says Christina Johansson, Interim CEO and CFO of Bilfinger. “Green hydrogen plays a decisive role in our customers and for European states as a sustainable source of energy to achieve their climate goals. With the appropriate scaling, the LOHC technology from Hydrogenious can become a forward-looking solution for it. “

“With Bilfinger, we gain our desired partner for the turnkey construction of large-scale LOHC systems with comprehensive expertise in engineering, assembly and maintenance,” says Dr. Daniel Teichmann, founder and managing director of Hydrogenious Lohc Technologies. “Our partnership optimizes optimally for market hood in hydrogen economy. By further improving the competitiveness of our technology through scale-up and standardization, all actors benefit from future green hydrogen value added chains. “

Hydrogenious LOHC technology is an efficient and safe method of transporting hydrogen: in the storage planes, the hydrogen is chemically bound to the LOHC substance benzyltoluene, a thermal oil. This carrier oil may be comparable in ambient circumstances to the delivery of e.g. Oil or diesel transported using conventional and current logistical infrastructures. The hydrogen consumer releases hydrogen in a release plane from the LOHC (at the required purity), while the carrier material is reused hundreds of times across the circuit. Thus, the hydrogenious LOHC technology has a number of important benefits over alternative hydrogen transport technologies.

Hydrogenious Lohc Technologies delivered its first LOHC storage device and commercialized it in the United States of America in 2018. Previously, a demonstration plant operated at the Fraunhofer IAO in Stuttgart. Construction on a large-scale LOHC storage facility in Chempark Dormagen is scheduled to begin in 2023/2024 – making it the world’s largest investment of this type (hydrogen storage in Lohc: approx. 1,800 tonnes in the year). Bilfinger provides services in the fields of basic engineering, civil engineering, and assistance with permit applications at the chemical park.
